How to Measure Wig Cap Size Before You Buy
October 15, 2026
Before you choose a wig length, measure the head that will wear it. A wig cap size describes fit; 10, 16 or 20 inches describes hair length. The two measurements cannot stand in for each other. This guide helps you make a usable measurement note and send it to the seller before ordering.
What you need to measure wig cap size
Use a flexible fabric measuring tape, a mirror and somewhere to write the results. Check whether your tape shows centimetres, inches or both. Keep one unit throughout the note. If someone can help, ask them to check the tape at the back while you read the number.
Prepare your own hair as you intend to wear it beneath the wig. A large bun is a different shape from neatly arranged hair. The wig manufacturer Jon Renau recommends preparing biological hair before measuring and recording circumference, ear-to-ear and front-to-back measurements. Its Wig Sizing 101 guide includes illustrations of the routes. Use the measuring method requested by the seller of your chosen wig.
Start with head circumference
Run the fabric tape from your front hairline around the head, following the hairline to the nape and back to the starting point. Check that it has not twisted. Read and record the result without pulling the tape tight.
Repeat the measurement once. If the results differ, check the tape position rather than averaging two inconsistent readings. A note such as “circumference: ___ cm, measured with hair arranged underneath” gives a seller more useful information than “I think I am average.”
Record front-to-back and ear-to-ear
For front-to-back, measure from the front hairline along the centre of the head to the hairline at the nape. For ear-to-ear, follow the seller’s diagram across the top of the head. Jon Renau’s method uses a top-of-head point established seven inches back from the front hairline. Do not substitute a different route without telling the seller.
Label each result immediately. Three unlabelled numbers are easy to mix up later, particularly if you are comparing more than one store. Keep the measuring diagram or its link beside the note so the seller knows how you took the readings.
Compare the chart for the actual wig
Look for a cap chart or specific measurements on the product you intend to buy. A size label from another brand is a reference, not confirmation of this product’s fit. Ask what any adjustment range means and which measurements the seller uses to recommend a size.
If your measurements fall between options, send the full set and ask for advice. Do not assume that a strap, comb or band can make any cap fit. Also confirm whether those features are present on the particular style; product photographs do not always show every detail inside the cap.
Keep lace size and wig cap size separate
The YOOME HAIR straight Vietnamese hair wig is listed with a 5×5 HD lace closure and five hair lengths. The closure measurement does not state the head circumference. Confirm cap measurements and fastening details with us before ordering if these are not shown.
For help reading the other product specifications, see our 5×5 closure wig buying guide. You can also use the fit section of our hair guide alongside the product page.
A measurement message you can copy
“I am considering (insert product name and hair length). My circumference is ___ cm, front-to-back is ___ cm, and ear-to-ear is ___ cm. I used the measuring guide linked above with my hair arranged as I plan to wear it. Can you confirm the cap measurements, adjustment range and fastening method for this option?”
Send the message through YOOME HAIR support before checkout. Keep the reply with your measurement note so you can refer to the confirmed details when choosing.
